HISTORY

1982 – WE FIRST STARTED OUR WORK
1985 – RECOGNIZED BY THE AGDA
1995 – GROW TO OVER 100 VOLUNTEERS
2010 – BECAME PART OF WOMEN’S RIGHTS
2015 – BECAME A GLOBAL VOLUNTEER

The Juma institute was created in October, 2020. The vision was born out of the lifetime fight initiated with the implementation of the Belo Monte hydroelectric by the founder, Juma Xipaia.

The scope of the environmental, cultural and territorial destruction of this endeavor, combined with the corruption and the co-optation process of indigenous and non-indigenous leaders were met with strong resistance by Juma, at the time, a teenager indigenous leader in the frontlines of the movement against the construction of the hydroelectric.

In 2019, the Amazonia Centro do Mundo event in Altamira, allowed for a reunion and understanding between the various social movements after 10 years of division, culminating in their re-articulation at a regional, national and international level. At this event, Kayapó chief Raoni Metuktire demonstrated his full support for the Juma’s struggle, as an inspiration to the indigenous female leaders of the Middle-Xingu.
