STRENGTHENING BIODIVERSITY MONITORING AND INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE

On September 7th and 8th, 2025, the Yupá village, located in the Xipaya Indigenous Land, welcomed the team from the Colombian company Savimbo, composed of Indigenous experts dedicated to biodiversity monitoring. The initiative focuses on identifying small and large species that are endangered or critically threatened, as well as developing projects aimed at generating biodiversity credits.

During the meeting, a pilot project for wildlife monitoring was presented, based on the use of camera traps over a six-month period. The goal is to expand knowledge about the species present in the territory and support the development of future territorial management projects, as well as other initiatives of interest to the communities.

The event was organized by the Juma Institute, in partnership with the Panakari Indigenous Association (AIPAN) and with financial support from Health in Harmony/SAMA. Although there is not yet a formal partnership, the Juma Institute seeks to strengthen dialogues with initiatives that share the same principles: defending the rights and autonomy of Indigenous peoples, valuing traditional knowledge, and protecting biodiversity. The expectation is that this collaboration will create new opportunities for cooperation and strengthen actions that bring together science, tradition, and conservation for the benefit of both the communities and the planet.
